Course Number/Title/Credit Hours: MH080 / Basic Mathematics / 0 credits

Course Description:

This course concentrates on a review of operations with whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion and percents. How to use a hand held calculator for computation and exploration of numerical relationships is also covered. The following topics are introduced:  algebraic equations, factoring techniques, linear and quadratic functions, formulas, exponents and graph and table reading. The emphasis is on application. Students who pass MH080 will be given an algebra assessment based on the content of MH090. Those who pass the assessment will be able to register for college level courses whose prerequisite reads: Placement into College Level Math Course or passing grade on all required developmental math courses. Those who do not pass the assessment will be required to take MH090, Basic Algebra.

Philosophy of the Course:

Success in many of the courses offered at Manor College depends on having appropriate mathematical skills. It is the intent of Basic Mathematics to provide an appropriate review opportunity for students whose mathematics skills are not yet adequate for the College's curriculum requirements.

Course Objectives:

After completing MH080 (Basic Math), the student will qualify to register for the next level no credit math course MH 090 (Basic Algebra) or register for a credited college level math class by being able to:

            1.         correctly perform the basic four operations on real numbers

            2.         compute using percents

            3.         evaluate expressions and formulae including those involving exponents

            4.         solve simple linear equations

5.         apply geometric principles of area, perimeter, volume, measurement and graphing on a coordinate system

            6.         solve word problems using the above skills

            7.         use a calculator to aid in the accomplishment of the above objectives

Student Outcomes:

1.         Outcome: Students will develop IL skills by logging onto the internet to access information pertinent to the course curriculum.

a)         Measure - Students will log onto the internet, and locate a math site related to the course material. After reviewing the site, the student will use the appropriate bibliographic (ex. MLA) to identify the site. They will write a short  (5 to 6 sentences) paragraph describing the material. They will include an evaluation of the usefulness of the information in terms of complementing the course material.

2.         Outcome: The students will be able to formulate an opinion about a topic in mathematics, substantiate this opinion with a logical argument and present this information in written form.

a)         Measure - The student will write a minimum of one paragraph stating their opinion and presenting a logical argument supporting their view on the use of calculators in mathematics and the role of calculators in education.

3.         Outcome: The students will demonstrate competency in the course material.

a)         Measure - Students will demonstrate competency in course material by completing the course work with a satisfactory rating.

This is a developmental course. The rate at which the material is covered depends on the skill level of the class.

Approaches to Teaching:

These objectives will be accomplished through lectures, classroom discussions and cooperative learning in problem solving situations. Students are encouraged to seek one on one instructional time in the Learning Center if they are having difficulty with the material.

Procedures for Evaluation and Grading:

Passing MH080 will be based on student performance on tests and outcomes.

Test 1………..15%

Test 2..………15%

Test 3………..15%

Outcomes …...15%

Final…………40%

This is a pass/fail course.  You will receive a Satisfactory if you pass and an Unsatisfactory if you fail.  A student needs an overall average of  70% to pass.

Students will also be given an algebra assessment based on the course content of MH090. Those who pass the assessment will be able to register for college level courses whose prerequisite reads:  Placement into College Level Math Course or passing all required developmental math courses. Those who do not pass the assessment will be required to take MH090, Basic Algebra.
